Moeen Ali claimed England’s only wicket of the morning session as the first Test against the West Indies got under way in Barbados.
Moeen dismissed debutant opener John Campbell lbw for a lively 44 as the Windies posted a lunch score of 89 for one – a solid start after opting to bat first.
England had earlier solved their selection puzzle by leaving out Stuart Broad, and his 433 Test wickets, as well as Jack Leach, their most used bowler in the 3-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka before Christmas.
That left Sam Curran to open the bowling alongside James Anderson and Adil Rashid included as second spinner but there was little in the Dukes ball or the Kensington Oval pitch to excite the attack.
Moeen prevented a wicketless morning’s play when he drew a misjudged sweep from Campbell but Kraigg Brathwaite (31no) and Shai Hope (14no) regained control for the hosts.
