COLCHESTER United have completed the signing of midfielder Brendan Wiredu on an 18-month contract.

The 21-year-old, who made ten appearances for the U's during a loan spell in the 2019-20 season, arrives at the JobServe Community Stadium after leaving a long association with Charlton Athletic.

Wiredu posted a message on social media, following his departure from Charlton.

He wrote: "Right. This is not going to be easy.

"The thought of leaving MY club was never ever something I saw happening when I was coming up through the academy.

"When I received the call from my agent presenting a first team opportunity, I was instantly happy then actually felt quite sad.

"Sad that it didn't quite happen as I had constantly dreamed and hoped since the day I walked into this club with my mum at the age of seven.

"Sad to think I am leaving the place I have spent more of my life than without!! "I now understand this is part of football. It's time to move on. My journey at Charlton has come to an end.

"The fans have reminded me on many occasions how amazing you are - from the genuine joy and happiness when I got my debut to the one million aggressive 'why aren't you playing first team' tweets I get daily.

"Thank you for the love!

"I also really want to thank the academy staff past and present for all of the fond memories, lessons and punishments over the years.

"Special mentions to Steve Avory, Jason Euell, Hamza Serrera, Sergei Baltacha, Bert Dawkins, Joe Francis and Adam Coe. There would be no Academy without the likes of them!

"Let's just say I've learned a lot, not just about football but also about life."

Colchester boss Steve Ball believes Wiredu will bring plenty of quality to the U's squad.

Ball told the U's website: "It's great to get Brendan over the line ahead of the run of games we have now.

"He is a superb athlete with a strong engine, and his qualities as a footballer will benefit us without a doubt.

"He's still at a great age for development, but we already know he can perform in a number of positions across midfield and defence."
