SWINDON Town manager Richie Wellens felt 'over confidence' played a part in his side's 3-1 defeat at Colchester United.

The Robins had been the better side in the first half and went ahead just after half-time through Diallang Jaiyesimi's strike.

But Colchester roared back in the final quarter of the match, with Theo Robinson's double and Luke Norris's goal earning the hosts victory against the League Two leaders.

Wellens said: “We had a disappointing last 20 minutes.

"I think we switched off and it's only the 20 minutes in probably 14 games, so hopefully it'll only be the 20 minutes.

“We were over confident in the last 20 minutes and I want them to show me a reaction now.

“I want us to show more bravery on the ball; we didn’t show enough and we dropped far too deep and allowed them to put long balls in our box.

"(Luke) Norris is leaning in, second balls are landing in and around the penalty spot or edge of the box and we gave too many free-kicks away.

"We need to learn those lessons.

“Their keeper pulled off three or four wonderful saves.

"But on a couple of those occasions, we shouldn’t give him the opportunity to pull off those saves - we should be scoring.

“We need an out and out striker because we haven’t got one eligible at the moment.

“If you look at their subs, they probably helped them win the game and we just haven’t got those options on the bench at the minute.

“If we’ve got a striker, we should be three or four up and it takes the pressure off the rest of the team.”

Swindon, who were foiled on a number of occasions by Colchester keeper Dean Gerken, registered seven shots on target overall.

In contrast, the U's had three efforts on target but scored from all of them, something that frustrated Wellens.

"Did they cause us any danger in general play?

"I can't remember them doing that.

"(Courtney) Senior went down the right and missed a chance but I can't remember Steven (Benda) making a save.

"So the only danger was long balls and set plays."

Swindon's next match is a top of the table clash with second-placed Exeter City, on Saturday.

But boss Wellens denies that there is any extra pressure on his side, after their defeat at Colchester.

He added: "Pressure in term of what? "We put pressure on ourselves anyway and we're back at home again."
