JASON Demetriou is not concerned by Southend United's slow start to the season.

The Shrimpers have suffered five successive defeats and sit bottom of the League Two table.

But Demetriou, who returned to action at the weekend, feels Blues are working too hard not to succeed.

"I’ve been in football long enough to know when you see how hard the manager and his team work and how intense our work is in training that it’s hard not to succeed really," said Demetriou.

"When you work really hard things change and it definitely will, maybe when one or two more senior boys are back and we have a run of games.

"I’m sure we will be fine."

Blues were relegated from League One last season, after winning just four of their 35 matches.

But Demetriou does not feel that will contribute to the current campaign.

"Of course people will say it’s rolling over but it’s a whole new team and coaching staff so I’m not worried at all," said the 32-year-old midfielder.

"No league is ever won or lost in the first couple of months.

"Of course we would’ve liked a couple of wins but once we get that first win it will give everyone confidence.

"Other boys are coming back and I’m really confident we will get there."

However, Blues were unable to get back on track on Saturday as Morecambe fought back from a goal down to triumph 2-1 at Roots Hall.

And Demetriou was disappointed not to pick up any points on his return to action.

"We’ve looked over it again and we gave away two goals that were easily avoidable," said Demetriou.

"We started well, we got the goal which was nice and the boys’ confidence picked up a bit.

"But once we do get a win I think all the patterns and everything we work on will really start to shine."

And Demetriou is also keen to help make that happen after returning from an ongoing knee problem to play.

"It was nice to get back out there," said Demetriou.

"Originally I wasn’t supposed to be playing 90 minutes but a couple of lads cramped up and I felt good.

"I said I wanted to stay on and hopefully I can get a good run of games now."

Next up is a trip to Crawley Town and Demetriou knows it will be another tricky test.

"It will be a tough challenge on Saturday but hopefully it’s one we will win," said Demetriou.

"We need to get into our stride."
