HARRY Seaden worked his way into Southend United’s record books when making his Shrimpers debut.

Seaden’s father, John, made 21 appearances for Blues during the 1980s.

And never before in the club’s 114 year history had a father-son duo both played League football for Southend, until Seaden lined up between the sticks against Gillingham on Tuesday night.

“It was great for me to play and it was a proud moment for me and my family,” said Seaden.

“My dad played 20 odd games for the club and it’s nice to have been able to follow in his foot-steps.

“He’s been a huge help to me and has always been hugely supportive of me in my career and also my brother Charlie who plays for Rayleigh Town.

“It was really nice I was able to make my debut but I want to try and build on that now so I’ll keep on working really hard.”

Seaden replaced the injured Mark Oxley to line up against the Gills.

And the 18-year-old, who is based in Rayleigh, was thrilled to represent his home-town club.

“I’ve been here six years now and Southend’s my team who I have supported since I was kid so it was a special moment for me, said Seaden.

“Of course I was nervous because it was a big game but that’s normal in football.

“It was a performance to build on and I’ll learn from the mistakes.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen before the weekend and if another goalkeeper will be coming in.

“But if I get another chance to play then that would be great and I’ll be giving it my best.”

Seaden has previously played for England at under 16 and under 17 age-groups, making nine appearances for his country.

But it was not until he started FitzWimarc School that he switched to playing in goal.

“I used to be a centre-back,” said Seaden.

“I played there with Rayleigh Town and Rayleigh Boys but when I went to Fitz I just put myself in goal.

“I was taught there by the Cowleys and they really pushed me too.”

The only previous father-son combination to line up for Blues were Bob and David Jack.

But David, who was with the club in the 1930s, only made one appearance in the cup.
