Two teams who have had outstanding Decembers and closed out their 2018 fixtures with 1-0 wins are contenders for the performance of the day award in the Bostik League.

Brightlingsea Regent brought the final month of the year to a close in fine style as they completed their fifth win in six premier division outings.

Bishop’s Stortford were the side on the wrong end of the scoreline this time as they were beaten by the single goal at the Taydal Stadium, but Regent’s fans were kept waiting for their win.

It was secured in time added on at the end of the match when Aaron Condon scored his fifth goal in the last three games.

The decisive strike came when Matt Cripps fired in a cross that Condon headed down, before going round a defender and smashing the ball into the net to earn three points for his side that has left them eight clear of the relegation zone.

It is the type of result that could easily earn Brightlingsea the performance of the day award, but on this occasion, there was an even more notable one coming in division north.

It was another derby encounter as a resurgent Witham Town headed to second-placed Maldon & Tiptree and honours went to the visitors as they won 1-0 to cap an excellent month.

Sam Ashford’s goal in the 44th minute, added to a disciplined and resolute defensive display earned Witham the points at a Jammers side who are pushing strongly for promotion.

Maldon did stay second, despite their loss, but the result allowed Witham to close out a December that has seen them win four of their five games and draw the other as their unbeaten run was extended to six.

And their latest success also earned them the final Performance of the Day award for 2018 from the north Essex sides playing in the Bostik League.
