FORMER Walton schoolboy Dom Barrett has been crowned as tenpin bowling's 2018 US Open champion.
He won four matches en route to a famous victory, including a thrilling one-pin success over top-seed Jakob Butturff, from Arizona, in the title match, 207-206.
The 33-year-old right-hander, a former student at Tendring Technology College, became the third foreign-born player to win the US Open, joining Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi (2001) and Canada’s Francois Lavoie (2016). He earned the $30,000 top prize and coveted green jacket presented to the champion. It was his second major championship and seventh PBA Tour title.
“This means so much,” said Barrett, runner-up at the 2015 US Open and the 2013 PBA World Championship.
“Especially for my family at home, too.
"My wife has hardly had any sleep for the last ten weeks with a newborn baby, so I think it’s now time for me to take care of my dad duties and take care of my family.”
