HOLLAND FC assistant boss Steve Davis is stepping down from his role with a “heavy heart”.

The former defender made the decision over the weekend due to a change in personal circumstances which means he is unable to give the job the time and commitment needed.

Davis had been working alongside first-team boss Rob Batten, who will now be jointly assisted by Calvin Allen and Richard Downes.

The pair are stepping up for the remainder of the season, at least.

“I’ve decided to step down from my role as assistant manager at Holland,” Davis told the Gazette.

“My partner is taking on a new role at work which will see her working more hours and especially weekends, certainly for now.

“It means my commitment levels will be nowhere near what they need to be to offer 100% commitment to Holland.

“So with a heavy heart, I’ve made this decision.”

Holland are seventh in Thurlow Nunn League division one south but have lost their last two league matches, at Hackney Wick and then 2-1 at home to neighbours Wivenhoe Town on Friday night.

They will hope to put things right when they welcome fellow Tendring side Brightlingsea Regent Reserves to the W&S Scaffolding Community Stadium tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

“We’ve struggling to get back to our best and hit our early-season form in the last few weeks,” added Davis.

“Missing key players in key areas has made it difficult for us but, putting that aside, we still haven’t played anywhere near as well as we’re capable.

“In the losses against Hackney Wick and Wivenhoe, we lacked desire, fight and a willingness to win second balls – all crucial to picking up points, especially away from home.

“Next up are Brightlingsea and May and Baker (who thumped Little Oakley 8-0 on Saturday) and we need to up our performance levels.”

Wivenhoe are also back in action tonight, when they entertain Needham Market Reserves in the League Challenge Cup.
