FRINTON Golf Club junior Daniel Nicholls made it to the final of the St Andrews Boys' Open.
The 14-year-old did exceptionally well before being beaten 3/1.
The preliminary round was a scratch stroke play event over the Eden course. The competition was open to all 17-year-old juniors from around the world and 140 took part, with the top 32 qualifying for a matchplay knockout over three days. Nicholls won the scratch stroke event with a gross score of 67.
He therefore qualified in first place for the knockout stages and went on to win his first round, second round, quarter-final and semi-final matches, before narrowly losing in the final.
In the semi-final, Nicholls recorded a score of six under par on the actual Old Course.
He the final he came up against a young Japanese tour player who had twice been the boys' World Champion.
Nicholls was unfortunate to lose 3/1.
Meanwhile, Frinton's ladies played the Daily Mail Foursomes strokeplay event and Angela Low and Yvonne Davies won with a nett score of 78.
They now qualify to go onto the next round.
Joan Stevenson and Lyn Lawrence were in second place with a score of 80 and Ginny Richardson and Jan McLellan took third with 80.5.
The Forres Cup competition was also held and this is a nine-hole stableford for juniors on the Kirby Course.
Jack Walker was the winner with a respectable score of 29 points.
Young Chelsey Duffy took second with 24 points and Louie Rouse was in third place with 19.
