A kids football match held at the weekend did not break lockdown rules because it was linked to a professional team.

Essex Police has confirmed officers were called to the match, which was being held, Laindon off Common Road, Billericay, but no further action was taken.

Officers spoke with coaches of the two sides who said they were part of the youth and academy set-up at a Premier League football team.

And officers deemed no breaches of Covid rules had occurred because the Government says elite sport is still permitted during the lockdown.

It is understood officers took the view the children involved in the match were connected to elite sport and were therefore looking to further their careers.

However, they would likely have taken action if the match was connected to a grassroots football club, as all non-professional sport is banned under lockdown rules.

According to the Government website, the rules for sport and physical activity are as follows:

  • Elite sportspeople (and their coaches if necessary, or parents/guardians if they are under 18) - or those on an official elite sports pathway – can compete and train
  • Indoor gyms and sports facilities will remain closed
  • Outdoor sports courts, outdoor gyms, golf courses, outdoor swimming pools, archery/driving/shooting ranges and riding arenas must also close
  • Organised outdoor sport for disabled people is allowed to continue

There are also strict rules relating to exercise, which is permitted throughout lockdown.
