A MAN was rushed to hospital after he was stabbed in the stomach in Southend town centre.

Police were called to the junction of Victoria Avenue and Queensway shortly before 3.20pm on Saturday, amid reports of an assault.

Essex Police have said a man was found with a single stab wound to his abdomen.

The victim was taken to hospital soon after but his injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

A 55-year-old man was arrested a short time later on suspicion of causing GBH with intent and possession of a knife and he is currently in custody.

Ian Gilbert, leader of the Southend Council, praised police for their swift response.

However, he added: “It’s extremely important everybody follows the rules of the lockdown for a while longer yet.

"We know it’s difficult, but it’s designed to keep people safe.

“Everybody who is not following the rules is putting everybody else’s life at risk.

“Well done to the police for moving so quickly.”

A police spokesman said they are appealing for more information.

He added: “We believe this is an isolated incident and there is no risk to the wider public.

“If you saw anything, have any CCTV or dash cam footage, or have any other information please call us on 101 quoting incident 586 of 2 May or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
