A MOPED rider feared he’d broken his neck after a serious crash.

Neil Manser was out riding his moped on Somnes Avenue on Canvey on Thursday morning.

The 37-year-old, who thankfully was wearing a helmet, was suddenly struck by a car turning with barely any notice.

Mr Manser said: “I was travelling down Somnes Avenue, through the traffic [when the Toyota Prius pulled out].

“I went flying over the handlebars and slid on my helmet across the road and the moped landed on the pavement.

“I had to lay there very still as they thought I had broken my neck.”

Mr Manser, who lives on Fairlop Avenue, was rushed to hospital in a neck brace, but thankfully his injuries were not serious.

He added: “I thought everything was broken, however I have since had a CT scan and X-rays and I can now say I have no broken bones, I’m just very bruised and sore from the neck down.

“And since the crash my moped has now been stolen, which is gutting.”

The road was partially closed for several hours on Thursday morning while ambulance and police forces attended the scene.

There was a huge build up of traffic for the morning as the crash happened during rush hour.

The road was eventually cleared and traffic began to ease before lunchtime.

Caron Johns wrote on social media: “The road was properly backed up, no one could move, it was a bit of a nightmare.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We were called to reports of a collision involving a motorbike and a car in Somnes Avenue, Canvey Island shortly before 8am on Thursday February 6.

“The rider of the motorbike, a man in his 30s, sustained a foot injury

“A 25 year-old man has been reported for careless driving.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We were called at 7.56am with reports of a collision on the B1014 on Canvey.

“We sent one ambulance and took a patient to Southend Hospital for further care.”
