COLCHESTER’S first micropub is set to open its doors to the public for the first time this month.

The Magnet is opening inside part of what was once the Norfolk pub, in North Station Road, on Friday, May 21.

Named in honour of famous Colchester scientist William Gilbert and his work on magnetism, the business is the brainchild of friends Robert Searle, 52, and Ian Taylor, 44.

It will be the borough’s first micropub and the first in Essex north of Maldon.

Mr Searle, who lives in Colchester, said: “The micropub shuns modern influences on pubs, like fruit machines, pool tables or darts boards.

“The idea is to create the atmosphere of the old style pub.

“It is about promoting conversation inside the premises and getting people talking.”

The business partners are former city workers, who, despite having no publican experience, decided to take a leap of faith during the Covid pandemic.

After an extensive search across north Essex, they chose the redeveloped Norfolk, which closed in 2018.

Mr Searle said: “We have seen micropubs set up in Essex and we thought there was a good opportunity to bring the concept to Colchester and bring the town something different.

“We looked at various venues in north Essex as there is a gap in the market.

“We have had the premises for a few months and we have invested a lot of effort and time getting it ready.”

Social distancing rules mean when The Magnet first opens there will be room for 25 drinkers, but once rules are relaxed there will be space for more punters inside.

Mr Searle said: “It will be very traditional with beers and ciders, as well as some spirits. We won’t be doing cocktails.

“There will be bar snacks, but no food.

“Next door there is a new high-end fish and chip shop, which will be opening in the future.

“Colchester has a great night-time economy and it has thrived more than other places in Essex.

“I know the town really well and I am hoping the business will do well.

“We do expect it to be popular and a good addition to Colchester’s night-time offering.”
