A council is asking residents to mark Remembrance Day with a doorstep tribute.

Maldon District Council is basking the town to mark the two-minutes silence at 11am on November 11 from their doorsteps, to support a national show of pride and appreciation.

The coronavirus pandemic has meant the annual parade and wreath laying will not take place outside the War Memorial.

Instead, on Remembrance Day, the council will be posting a pre-recorded video on social media of wreaths being laid by Penny Channer and Deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Dr James Bettley JP DL at a display at the council offices.

Council vice-chairman Mrs Channer said: "The silence on Remembrance Day is one of the most poignant times of the year.

"It allows us to reflect on the sacrifices made for us by the armed forces. Many people will be thinking of loved ones who never returned.

"The need to stop Coronavirus from spreading means we can’t gather at war memorials this year.

"Even so, I believe the sight of people across Maldon district observing the silence on their doorsteps at 11am will paint a picture of respect and thanks for the fallen that is as powerful and moving as any formal parade."

The council will also be posting a message on November 11, from Garrison Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Jim McManus AAC and a video of the Last Post played by a musician from the British Army Band Colchester edited with WW2 film footage.

The council is also asking residents not to forget to support the Royal British’s Legion Poppy Appeal.
