A HOSPITAL’S calming lake feature has been temporarily drained as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment.

Colchester Hospital, in Turner Road, is undergoing a large-scale redevelopment, which has also involved the front of its main building being completely remodelled.

The ambitious project, which marks the first major work to be carried out on the entrance since the facility opened in 1985, includes the construction of a new reception area and updated road system around the site.

The revamp, having been started in February 2019, was expected to be completed last November, but the project was delayed following the coronavirus outbreak.

Work is now under way once again, with attention turning to the reimagining of the hospital’s lake, in which ducks, fish and other wildlife thrive.

Paul Fenton is director of estates and facilities at the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Colchester Hospital.

He said: “We want our patients, visitors and staff to continue to enjoy the lake.

“That is why we are improving this area at the front of the hospital.

“Continuing to look after local wildlife is important.”

As part of the lake’s refurbishment, tree roots will be removed, the banks will be renewed, and new equipment will be installed, which will maintain water quality.

It will also be relined and decorated with new plants.

Having sought advice from the Essex Wildlife Trust, the lake’s resident fish have been moved off-site and are being cared for by a licensed company.

A small fenced pool has also been set up for the hospital’s ducks while the work is carried out.

A spokesman for the trust added: “The benefits of green space to health and wellbeing are well recognised.

“These improvements to the lake and surrounding area will mean patients, visitors and staff can enjoy it for years to come.

“The improved habitat will also benefit local wildlife.”
