HARWICH Haven Authority says it is working hard to make sure food and essential medical supplies continue to flow into Haven Ports during the coronavirus pandemic.

With nearly 40 per cent of all UK container traffic arriving into Haven Ports - which include Harwich Port, Ipswich Port and Felixstowe Port - the authority says it is vital to protect its employees from the virus.

It has also highlighted the importance of maintaining its operations and continuing to support the UK supply chain.

In order to achieve this the authority has introduced a range of measures.

This includes making sure all boats arriving in the Haven from foreign ports submitting a Maritime Declaration of Health before a pilot boards the ship.

A Harwich Haven Authority spokesman said recommended social distancing has been introduced across our operations.

They added: "We have closed our Vessel Traffic Services Operations Centre at Harwich to all non-essential staff.

"Cleaning regimes have been reinforced across our premises and aboard our fleet of vessels.

"In addition all personnel using our pilot launches or visiting our premises will be asked to use hand sanitising products on entry and exit.

"All non-essential face to face meeting, both on and off our premises, have been cancelled or rearranged to use video conferencing technology."

The authority said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with government agencies to make any necessary adjustment to its operating procedures in line with official guidance.
