RESIDENTS were given exclusive access to the archaeological dig at one of Colchester’s most important historical sites during a public open day.
Dozens of members of the public visited the site of the former Essex County Hospital.
Colchester Archaeological Trust is investigating the site on behalf of Essex Housing, Essex County Council’s housing development firm.
Essex Housing is facilitating the dig as part of preparations for the site to be redeveloped for 120 new homes.
Gwyn Owen, head of Essex Housing, said: “We are delighted our proposed redevelopment of the site has provided the opportunity to investigate the remains which are on site, that we have been able to involve the community and that residents have shown their enthusiasm for Colchester’s unique Roman heritage by turning out in numbers.”
A rich selection of Roman finds including the remains of some pottery kilns have already been uncovered.
Archaeologist Adam Wightman added: “It was fantastic to display some of this to residents and to talk them through our work at the open day.
“We were delighted that so many people came, seemed to enjoy the opportunity greatly and provided positive feedback.
“We look forward to holding further open days and showing even more residents our work.”
