A CHEF from Colchester has been named as a runner-up at a national competition to create the best sausage roll.

Alan Paton, who is executive head chef at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, finished third in the the Great Sausage Roll Off 2020.

Mr Parton worked with Iain Devine, from The Drunken Butcher in Manchester, to create the hangover cure sausage roll with black pudding served with smoky beer.

Clacton and Frinton Gazette:

The competition, in its eighth year, saw 18 top chefs from across the country battle it out to create the best sausage roll.

The competition was overseen by a Michelin star-studded judging panel and was won by Alan Chiltern with his Old English sausage roll.

As well as the plate for the judges, each competitor supplied samples of their entries, which were auctioned off to the crowd in aid of Hospitality Action.

Combined with a range of other silent auction items, the event raised over £3,500.

Angus McKean, founder of The Great Sausage Roll Off, said: “I always say the Roll Off line up gets better every year, however, this year the chefs have really out-done themselves.

“The competition was really tough, I couldn’t call it.”
