A HAIRDRESSER is celebrating 50 years since she took over a salon.

Susan Guernari runs her eponymous salon in Hamilton Road, Colchester.

She it took over when she was 18 and has worked there ever since.

The salon is not just her place of work, it is also her home as she moved next door 49 years ago - after marrying husband Joe in 1970.

The grandmother-of-two said: “It wasn’t really much of a business when I took it over.

“I did my apprenticeship and then went there.

“It began with just me, it was quite a small shop and I didn’t know how it was going to go. We started it on a shoestring.”

After two renovations the salon has now extended into her garden, and she has five members of staff.

The salon has evolved to match popular fashion trends.

Susan said: “When we first opened it was all sets and perms but that’s been the biggest change, people now want colours and blowdrys.

“Over the years we have had loads of regulars, I just enjoy

cutting hair and talking to people as the clients become your friends.

“People just feel comfortable and relaxed here.”

Susan loves working with her employees and does not feel ready to retire yet.

She said: “There are no immediate plans for the future, I just want to carry on until I can’t do it any more.”

Susan does not work full time any more, and when she is not cutting hair she is taking part in zumba classes, or working out at the gym.

She has a daughter, son and two grandchildren.
