A NEW supermarket is a step closer to being built on the site of a former holiday park in Walton.
Cut-price chain Aldi unveiled plans in January for a new store and car park on the former Martello Caravan Park site.
The 1,250 sq ft store and 102-space car parkwould create up to 50 jobs and open in early 2016 if approved.
Frinton and Walton Town Council recommended the plans for approval at a meeting last week.
Walton councillor Delyth Miles said: “This would be something which would be very much welcomed by our residents.
“I know they are desperate to have this kind of development and we, as a town, need that kind of facility.”
But other councillors were wary about the plans, which they said did not show the complete picture of the planned development for the Martello site, which includes flats and houses.
The town council recommended approval of the proposal by a narrow vote, with seven in favour and five against.
Tendring Council will make the final decision.
