Everyone needs a little help sometimes, especially when it comes to our mental health.

World Mental Health Day is on Sunday, October 10.

The World Health Organisation chose this date to start a conversation about mental health and encourage us all to reach out and get support if we need it.

We have put together some tips and resources that we hope will help anyone who needs it.

What is the theme for World Mental Health Day this year?

Every year, the World Federation for Mental Health picks a theme for the day.

This year, it is "Mental health in an unequal world."

According to research by the Mental Health Foundation, the Covid pandemic has been most difficult on people who already face long term challenges.

This includes people with long term health conditions, people who face various forms of discrimination or those who have to parent on their own.

How can I look after my mental health?

We might be living in an unequal mental health world but that doesn't mean anyone is untouched by it.

Here are some top tips from the Mental Health Foundation itself about how you can best look after yourself and keep track of your mental health.

  • Talk about your feelings
  • Keep active
  • Eat well
  • Drink sensibly
  • Keep in touch with people- even on the phone
  • Ask for help
  • Take a break
  • Do something you’re good at
  • Accept who you are
  • Care for others

How can I get involved in World Mental Health Day?

Everything starts with a conversation- reach out to your family and friends and check in on how they are.

Sometimes, even one conversation can make all the difference - just don't foregt to check in on how you are feeling too.

The Mental Health Foundation also has lots of free resources and expert research that you can use to educate yourself and better support someone in need.

There are alos lots of ways to contribute financially too and you don't need to be flush with cash to do so.

Show solidarity with a green ribbon, badge or face covering, starting at just £1.90.

You can also get involved on social media by sharing their resources or taking part in your fundraiser too.
