HOPES a recycling centre earmarked for closure could be saved by becoming part time have been dashed.

Martin’s Farm in St Osyth is set for closure by Essex County Council as part of wider cost-cutting plans.

Last week those fighting the closure said they were hopeful that by opening the centre only two days a week could allow it to remain operational.

However in an interview with the Gazette councillor Kevin Bentley, the county council’s waste chief, said part closure was not a viable option.

He said: “One of the first things we looked at was part closure - yes we could do that but it would not achieve the savings we have to make.

“A very delicate and careful balance is needed, but reducing hours would not save enough money.”
