More homes added to Wellwick development in St Osyth

Wellwick Farms had previously been granted permission to build 190-home estate on the Wellwick Site, in Colchester Road, in 2016.

They were also permitted to build a new junction, access roads and an archery range.

The development will now be increased by an additional 37 homes, next to the St Osyth Priory Estate.

This comes after plans were put forward to Tendring Council in April 2024.

Of the additional homes, 24 would be built with the original development and 13 would be built the south of the site, near its entrance.

This would raise the total number of homes on the Wellwick site to 227 one to five-bedroom homes.

The application says: "This is considered appropriate considering that development in the location sought has already been secured in principle.

"The archery club, situated to the north of the consented residential envelope, has found accommodation elsewhere in St Osyth so the area dedicated to this use is no longer required.

"We understand that they are happy in their alternative location and do not intend to move location to the Wellwick site.

"Like the consented scheme, this proposal would serve as enabling development to fund further restoration works at St Osyth Priory, Tendring district’s most important single group of listed buildings."

During the plan's consultation period, it received one neutral comment, and one comment of support from St Osyth Parish Council.

The parish council clerk said they support Essex Highways' previous comment, stating work cannot begin until road safety concerns are addressed.

They include the junction off Colchester Road, a new footway from the proposed northern development provided on the east side of Colchester Road, providing a connection to existing bus stops north of the proposal site, and a 40mph speed limit to incorporate the new development on Colchester Road."

Tendring Council approved the plans last week.
