Clacton Pier marks its 155th birthday with big celebration

The landmark Essex attraction marked the milestone with a range of special events, giveaways and entertainment, drawing families from across the region.

A total of 155 lucky winners received special £1.55 rides wristbands, while 155 cupcakes were handed out during the celebrations.

Visitors also enjoyed a birthday cake baked by chef Jon Fraser, free live music across both days and a newly launched history trail highlighting key moments from the pier's past.

The celebrations concluded with a spectacular fireworks display featuring new pyrotechnics and a musical soundtrack that will be used at future events.

Pier spokesman Nigel Brown praised both visitors and staff for helping make the occasion memorable.

He said: “It was a very special weekend to be remembered.

“The owners put on a host of fun for everyone and families responded by turning up in their droves and helped to create a fantastic atmosphere.”

Alongside the entertainment, visitors could explore the new Pier into the Past history trail, which has become a permanent feature.

The trail tells the stories behind 12 significant locations from the attraction's history, including popular former attractions and entertainment venues.

Local historian Norman Jacobs also delivered a series of talks in the Boardwalk Bar, sharing insights into the pier's long past.

Mr Brown added: “Thanks also to our whole team who worked tirelessly in the heat to make sure everybody had a great time.

“It could not have gone any better and will give us plenty to live up to in five years' time when we celebrate our 160th birthday.”

Pier manager Harry Peek said the celebrations had taken significant planning and thanked staff and visitors for their support.

He added: “We are fortunate to have a great pier family who helped pull this all together and we were able to share it with the wider pier family of loyal guests who support us all through the year.

“It’s weekends like that that make us feel like one community and we hope everybody enjoyed it as much as we did.”
