Tendring District Scouts host Mother's Day afternoon tea

Scouts, their families and adult volunteers worked hard to ensure the event was a success, from baking and organising the kitchen, setting up tables with flower arrangements and origami daffodils, to organising Mother’s Day gifts and printed photos.

More than 60 people were warmly welcomed to the Tendring District Scouts hut in Valley Road from 2pm on Saturday, where they enjoyed sweet treats and tea throughout the afternoon.

The scouts were also able to host a raffle thanks to support from local organisations including Princes Theatre, Buds Flower Shop, Sophie’s Flowers, Parkers Garden Company.

Organisers were thankful to Morrisons Little Clacton and Harwich for donations of vouchers towards sandwiches and other treats.

The afternoon tea was held as part of fundraising efforts for Tendring District Scouts’ three expeditions set to take place in 2027.

Teams of young explorers will travel to the USA and Canada to hike and canoe through the Adirondack Mountains; to Kenya to volunteer in a school and spend time in the Maasai Mara nature reserve; and to Poland for the World Scout Jamboree.

Julie Talbot, the district lead volunteer for Tendring scouts, is supporting the scouts with their preparations for the expeditions.

“Expeditions like these really expand the horizons of the young people,” she said.

“They learn so much about teamwork, different environments, different cultures, and it is about the skills they get from it.

“It’s good for their future and their development. Even seeing how they’ve grown over the last five months, when they found out they were going on the expeditions, they’ve really taken the bull by the horns for this fundraising.

“They’ve worked together as a team and they’ve come up with some fantastic ideas.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for them. They’ll make new friends, they will just learn so much and be completely different people from it.”

To fundraise for the expeditions the scouts are hosting a monthly craft fair, held a tabletop sale last month, and will run a Father’s Day event and much more before the adventures begin next spring.

There are 560 young people involved in Tendring District Scouts aged between four and 18, with 13 groups in the area and 200 adult volunteers.
