TENDRING swimmers are encouraged to make a splash for charity at the annual Swimathon.

Clacton Leisure Centre and Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles, both run by Tendring Council, will host the nationwide fundraising challenge - which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Proceeds will go towards Cancer Research UK and end-of-life charity Marie Curie.

Mick Barry, councillor responsible for leisure and public realm, said: "Swimathon is the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim and it’s fantastic to see our local pools playing their part in this milestone year.

"Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or taking on your very first challenge, every length makes a difference in supporting two incredibly important charities.

"I hope to see lots of local people signing up and getting behind this brilliant event."

This year’s Swimathon sessions will take place at Clacton Leisure Centre from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Friday, March 20, and from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, March 2.

Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles will host sessions on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22 from 1pm to 5pm.

Participants can choose from individual challenges of 500m, 1.5km, 2.5km, and 5km, as well as the team events of 1.5km, 2.5km, 5km, or the ultimate Triple 5k.

The virtual MySwimathon challenge, which participants can complete in their own time, runs until March 31.

Last year’s Swimathon was held at more than 450 venues across the UK and raised more than £1million.

Since beginning in 1986, the event has raised more than £50million for charity.

Residents can register at swimathon.org.
