A school in Clacton was left without lighting or heating after the site suffered a complete power failure.
Clacton County High School had to shut on Tuesday morning, and sent an email out to students' parents and guardians letting them know pupils would be allowed home at 10.30am.
The school in Walton Road was left with no lighting, heating, IT or fire alarms after a power failure.
A spokesperson for the Sigma Trust, which runs the school, said: "Clacton County High School has taken the decision to close yesterday morning following a power failure affecting the majority of the building, meaning no lighting, heating, IT or fire alarms.
"It was deemed unsafe for students to stay on site and were therefore sent home after period one.
"Communications were sent to parents to advise their children would be returning home.
"A small provision has remained on site for those who were not able to go home.
"The school is expecting UK Power Network to attend and will continue to update parents on arrangements."
Clacton County High school has reopened today.
