A BOOK celebrating the lives of women in Walton has been launched to raise money for charity.

Walton author Steven Walker will launch his book Walton Women – A Community Celebration at The Walton Tavern from 5pm to 7pm on Monday, September 29.

The book features more than 50 entries about women from the community, both past and present, and aims to highlight their often overlooked contributions.

Steven said: "I’ve been working on this new book since the beginning of the year.

"It has been a rewarding project being able to highlight the numerous women who have made a contribution to our local community in big or small ways."

The book includes stories ranging from an alleged witch who was hanged in Chelmsford to a world champion golfer, the founder of Walton Foodbank, a charity shop owner, an opera singer, the first Girl Guide leader and a world-famous high wire artist.

Steven said: "My job was simply to put it all together, illustrate them with family pictures or archive material and present it to people interested in Walton-on-the-Naze."

The book will be sold for £10 in cash and will raise funds for Walton Foodbank and The Naze Protection Society.
