In the last few weeks, you may well have seen an increasing number of St George’s and Union flags appearing across the UK.
I know for a fact that there are an awful lot of St George’s flags being flown in Clacton.
Personally, I think it is rather uplifting to see the flags of this country being so proudly flown across the UK, including here in Essex.
A sentiment not shared by Essex County Council, it seems.
Just last week an email was sent by the council’s children and families senior leadership team to council staff saying it was “aware of the increasing visibility of St George’s and Union Jack flags displayed on road signs, bridges and trees in parts of Essex”.

The same email then offered them support and encouraged them to “reach out”, whatever that means, if the flags that have been put up in recent days upset them.
So, we have ordinary people across Essex celebrating who they are, and the council thinks staff need counselling. You really couldn’t make it up.
It really is an unbelievable overreaction and is emblematic of just how totally out of touch Essex County Council is with the people of this county.
No wonder they didn’t want elections in May.
It should really go without saying that both the Union and the St George’s flags are not only signs of unity and inclusion, but also of national pride.
Unlike Essex County Council, I am proud to say that all 12 Reform UK-controlled councils up and down the UK have no problem with the Union and St George’s flags being flown and have committed to not removing them from lampposts in their areas.
I believe we should never shy away from celebrating our nation so I support those who wish to express love for their country by flying our flags across Clacton, Essex and the rest of the country.
