Losing a loved one is one of the hardest experiences in life, and making funeral arrangements can feel overwhelming. Saying goodbye should be a personal part of your grieving process that is built around trust.

We sat down with West and Coe Funeral Services to discuss how their family-run funeral home supports families every step of the way, offering compassionate care that goes beyond the service itself.

Q: Many people are now choosing direct cremations. What are your thoughts on this option?

Direct cremations have become popular because they are often seen as simple and cost-effective choices. As a family-owned funeral directors, we completely understand the financial considerations and offer this service ourselves. However, we encourage families to also consider the emotional side of a farewell.

The real question is: How do you want to say goodbye? Everyone grieves differently, and for many, a ceremony helps with healing. Unlike direct cremations, funerals aren't just about what to do with the person who has passed, they're for bringing together the family, friends and community left behind as part of the grieving process: a dedicated time to reminisce, celebrate your lost one and share fond memories.

Q: What makes your approach to funerals different from larger companies?

We believe that funerals should never feel like a transaction. We’re not just here to organise a service, we’re here to support families for as long as they need us, whether that’s in the days after a loss or years down the line. We see the families we serve as friends, and many of them stay in touch with us for advice, support or even just a cup of tea when they need it.

With some national companies, direct cremation can be a very impersonal process. The deceased may be kept in a mortuary for weeks or transported hundreds of miles away. That’s not how we do things. Every family we help is looked after personally, with care, dignity and respect, right here in their local community.

Q: Why do you believe ceremonies are so important?

Funerals and memorial services are for the living as much as for the person who has passed. In our experience, families who don’t hold any kind of farewell often struggle to find closure. We’ve cared for families who lost loved ones during COVID and weren’t able to say goodbye properly. Many of them have deep regrets and feel stuck in their grief.

As bereavement expert Dr. Bill Webster says: “Everyone who has lost has to grieve in one way or another, and those who don’t grieve struggle to mend.” It’s something we see all too often. That’s why we always encourage families to think carefully about how they want to honour their loved one. It doesn’t have to be a traditional funeral, it could be a celebration of life, a small private gathering, or even a simple toast with close friends. What matters is that it feels right for you.

Q: What can families expect when they choose you?

Compassion, trust and genuine care. We’ve been serving our local community for over 100 years, and we believe in doing things the right way, not the quickest or the cheapest, but the most meaningful.

We are available 24/7 because grief doesn’t follow a schedule. Whether you need immediate support, advice about funeral options or just someone to talk to, we’re here. Families know they can always come back to us, not just as a funeral service but as friends who truly care.

Q: Any final thoughts for families considering their options?

Every goodbye should be personal. Whether you choose a traditional funeral, a direct cremation or something in between, make sure it reflects your loved one’s life and values. We are here to help guide you through that decision with honesty, compassion and the same care we’d give our own family.
