A University of Chester student reveller refused entry to a city centre nightclub was later caught drink-driving.

Thiyanesh Venkatefan, 29, of Abingdon Grove, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 30.

Prosecuting, Lisa Maguire said it was on the night of April 3 when CCTV operators saw men being refused entry to Rosies nightclub, and they got into a vehicle which was later seen being driven on Grosvenor Street. Venkatefan was the driver of the car, a Toyota Aygo, which was stopped.

Venkatefan confirmed he had been drinking and a breath test procedure found he had 67 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, nearly double the legal limit of 35.

Defending, Steve Coupe said the defendant was in his first year of university at Chester, and had a HGV licence.

He was "very apologetic and remorseful" for what he had done.

The court explained to the defendant that a driving ban for such an offence was mandatory, and magistrates imposed a 17-month disqualification, which would be reduced by 17 weeks upon successful completion of a drink-drive referral course.

Venkatefan was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £120 court costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
