Plans have been unveiled for a major development including schools, parks and 750 homes.

Residents could be set to see the large-scale development come to land south of Fambridge Road and Burnham Road as well as east and west of Station Road in Althorne.

Located to the south of Althorne, the application would see up to 750 new homes, up to 1,000sqm of commercial space, a primary school and educational provision, parks and allotments.

The plans include a new pedestrian footbridge over the nearby railway line, enhancements to Althorne Station, upgrades to Station Road and its level crossing, a new spine road and modifications to the junction at Station Road and the B1010 Fambridge Road.

The massive development would be built on a site of more than 86 hectares.

Developers DMJ Althorne submitted the application to Maldon District Council.

The developers suggest homes could range from one to five bedrooms, with a mixture of houses, flats, and bungalows, with 40 per cent designated as affordable housing.

In the application, the developer has listed some potential adverse impacts of the development.

These include “localised significant landscape impacts”, “localised significant visual impacts”, “less than substantial harm to the designated heritage assets” at the Grade II listed Parish Church of St Andrew and Church of St Nicholas and “harm to the non-designated heritage assets the Old Forge and War Memorial”.

However, the application claims there will be benefits to the proposals.

It says: “The scheme will make a significant contribution to the delivery of a wide range of new homes for Maldon, helping support the objective to deliver a minimum of 4,650 homes by 2029 and addressing development needs beyond.

“The scheme will also deliver up to 1,000sqm of commercial space, as well as an early year’s facility and, at the discretion of Essex County Council, a primary school.

“These carry ongoing benefits to new and existing residents by increasing the availability of shops and community infrastructure in Althorne and are expected to support 148 jobs and £17.6million of economic output per year.”
