Emotions ran high as hundreds flocked to a candle lit vigil for Sir David Amess MP.

Candles and lights flickered at Belfairs Park in Leigh tonight as families remembered the popular MP The Tory MP was killed in a fatal stabbing yesterday lunchtime.

Speeches and a minute silence were held tonight in the emotional memorial which was organised by kind residents from the town.

There were also various rounds of applause. Ian Gilbert, Labour Southend Council leader said: ""Both vigils today have been incredibly touching and moving and have gone to show just how well loved and respected Sir David Amess was.

 

 

"The community is still in shock but it was some comfort to see people gather tonight in his memory." Earlier today Members of national council of Iran have attended the scene to pay their respects.

They are holding images of the murdered MP Supporters are arriving holding photos of Sir David Amess at the scene Southend councillor and former mayor John Lamb said he dashed to the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh when he heard MP Sir David Amess had been “stabbed multiple times.”

“David was there holding his surgery at that Methodist church and this person had gone there to join the surgery and when he got the chance and he went in to be seen by David, then he drew a knife and stabbed him,” he told the PA news agency. By the time the councillor arrived, police cordons were up and he could not get into the church.
