VISITORS to Harwich soaked in some of the town’s most historic attractions for free during a celebratory weekend.

As part of National Heritage weekend, the Harwich Society opened the doors to almost all of its visitor attractions free of charge for all to enjoy.

Captain Jones’ House, Bobbit’s Hole nature reserve, the Redoubt Fort and the Maritime Museum were just some of the places opening their doors to show off some of the magic Harwich has on offer.

Foresters, in Church Street, was also opened as part of the weekend. Believed to be the oldest building in Harwich, it boasts a history dating back as far as 1450.

The town council also opened the Guildhall, a Grade I listed building which is now home to the town council but once a prison for criminals waiting to be sentenced.

Harwich Society secretary Maria Fowler said: “We are fortunate here to be steeped in such rich history; if you love history, then come to Harwich.”
