A MAN has denied historic sexual abuse charges after two women came forward to report they had been abused by a neighbour more than 40 years ago.

Ian Vinnell, 83, faces four counts of indecent assault relating to allegations dating back to the 1970s.

Colchester Magistrates’ Court heard the charges arose after two women came forward with allegations about Vinnell, who was a former neighbour.

Appearing before District Judge Timothy King yesterday, Vinnell, of Albany Gardens West, Clacton, indicated he would deny the charges.

Rima Begum, prosecuting, said: “The Crown submit these matters are not suitable for this court.

“This is a case of historic child sexual abuse dating back to the 1970s.

“They were young, there was a breach of trust, the Crown say magistrates’ sentencing powers are insufficient.”

Vinnell’s solicitor Elizabeth Bradshaw said further issues concerning his health are to be explored.

The court heard Vinnell, who attended court in a wheelchair accompanied by his partner, has dementia.

Judge King released Vinnell on unconditional bail until a plea and trial preparation hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on August 31.

He said: “I have decided the matter is too serious to be dealt with at the magistrates’ court here.

“Therefore I will allocate your case and trial.

“This will take place at Chelmsford Crown Court and that’s where all further hear - ings will now take place.

“The next hearing will be in four weeks time, on Tuesday, August 31.

“You must attend court on that occasion.

“You will be required to tell the court whether you are pleading guilty or not guilty.

“If you continue to plead not guilty the court will make arrangements for a trial to take place and this will probably happen next year.

“If you plead guilty on August 31, your sentence will be reduced substantially, there will be a real impact on the sentence imposed.

“If you plead not guilty and are found guilty the sentence wouldn’t be reduced at all.

“If you do not attend court on that occasion a warrant may be issued for your arrest.”
