As plug-in hybrids go, the Mercedes A 250 e is one of the most desirable yet.

As car companies scramble to launch electrified versions of their vehicles, it seems that Mercedes has got the formula just about spot on.

As with many of Merc’s offerings, you get stylish looks, a high-quality interior and confidence-inspiring handling.

But to add to that, the A 250 e offers some quite remarkable fuel economy statistics.

The 250 e has a combined fuel consumption figure of over 250mpg - making it enticing as a company car and to private buyers alike.

Many current hybrids offer an all-electric range in the 25-35 mile bracket, but the 250 e improves on that by some distance and is capable of travelling 44 miles on electric power alone.

When you do run out of charge, a 7.4 kW on-board AC charger allows charging from empty to 100 per cent in an hour and a half.

They’re the sort of numbers that could make those who are sceptical about electric motoring think the hybrid route is well worth a try.

Behind the wheel, it’s a car that offers brisk acceleration and enjoyable driving dynamics, although it’s by no means pulsating.

A 0-62mph time of 6.6 seconds feels swift enough for most everyday situations, with the 1.3-litre petrol engine offering 160hp and an additional 102hp available from the electric motor.

The accelerator is super-sensitive to throttle inputs, meaning the car is very responsive, although the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox can be a bit jerky at times.

The steering is accurate and trustworthy, but arguably lacks a bit of ‘feel’ by way of feedback.

The vehicle feels well planted in tighter corners, with grip levels being excellent.

On electric power, the car is smooth and quiet, which continues when you click over onto the combustion engine, unless you’re using a lot of revs, which is when things can get a bit rowdy.

In terms of looks, it's a handsome machine that looks classy from all angles and benefits from AMG bodystyling.

This plug-in hybrid version doesn’t change the aesthetics from that seen on the conventional version, with the only visual difference being a new charging port.

The headlight signature is distinctive, while a heavily-sculpted bonnet and side panels add a more purposeful feel.

The smart alloy wheels complete the look.

The interior is packed with high-quality materials and tech, and there’s plenty of space in the front and adequate room in the back.

Pricing for the A 250 e hatchback starts at £32,980 and there’s a choice of four model lines – AMG Line; AMG Line Executive; AMG Line Premium; and AMG Line Premium Plus, with the latter tested here.

From AMG Line Premium upwards, the car is equipped with the superb 10.25-inch digital cockpit, ambient lighting, illuminated doorsills with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering; Mercedes-Benz advanced sound system; and

aluminium trim.

The range-topping Premium Plus model adds a panoramic sunroof, which flooded the cabin with natural light and gave the interior a nice airy feel.

You also get memory seats for the driver and front passenger, with plenty of adjustment offering a comfortable seating position.

It all added up to creating a cabin that’s a very nice place to be and must rank among the best in the family hatchback market.

Safety-wise, the car is clearly up to standard as it has been granted the five-star Euro NCAP crash test result. It features safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.

In conclusion, it's an appealing offering in the ever-expanding hybrid market. While its looks and luxurious interior are obvious strong points, it's the economy figures that really catch the eye.
