Crime in Southampton saw a significant reduction during April as we all stayed inside due to the global pandemic. 

As a result of the country being in lockdown, Southampton saw reported crimes drop by more than 500 in comparison to the same period a year ago.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We did see a decrease in reported crimes when the Government restrictions were initially put in place.

"This is most likely as a direct result of the majority of residents following Government guidance and staying at home."

Through analysising data from police.uk, the Echo are able to bring you a side by side comparison of crime in April this year, compared to April 2019. 

Anti-social behaviour and violence and sexual offences were still the highest reported crimes however, the number of incidents did see a slight fall.

The figures show drugs related offences remained at the same level as the previous year during lockdown.

They also show reported incidents of shoplifting fell due to non-essential shops being closed.

The data reveals the reported number of burglaries decreased during lockdown, with most people remaining at home during the pandemic. 

A spokesperson for the Hampshire Constabulary said: "Throughout this period, we have engaged, explained the circumstances and encouraged people to do the right thing in complying with the government restrictions. 

"Enforcement action has been a last resort, when people are not listening and putting others at risk."

The total number of crimes reported in Southampton during April 2019 was 3,131 whilst in April 2020 the number lowered to 2,599.
