SOUTHEND United could lose close to £700,000 if they are forced to play their remaining matches behind closed doors.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that the UK government is considering banning sporting fixtures amid the coronavirus outbreak.

But a decision to stop fans watching Football League matches would hit Blues hard, according to the club’s head of commercial Rhys Ellingham

“If the remaining games are going to take place behind closed doors it would be a significant amount of money lost,” said Ellingham.

“After looking at figures  the number is just shy of £700,000.

“Obviously, the public’s health comes first but we would be more favourable towards games being postponed for a period of time rather than played behind closed doors.

“The fans have a huge part to play in football and it wouldn’t be natural to play without them supporting the club like they have done all season.

"But if safe enough we want to continue the games as planned."

Blues, who have nine games left to play this season, are also in desperate need for cash as the majority of their players and staff are also still waiting to receive their wages for February.

A judge also adjourned a bid to wind up the club this week after being told that the Shrimpers hope to be able to clear the outstanding tax debts to HMRC.
