SAM Barratt and Sam Mantom are both close to activating clauses in their contracts at Southend United.

Echosport understands Mantom is close to automatically triggering another year in his current deal with the Shrimpers while Barrett is nearing a clause which will see the club having to pay Maidenhead United - from where the winger joined last summer - more money.

Neither player featured for the Shrimpers in their 3-1 win against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

And boss Sol Campbell confirmed there was plenty to consider when selecting his matchday squad.

“I didn’t sign the contracts and there are nuances in all sorts of players’ contracts up and down the country and around the world,” said Campbell.

“For me it’s all about where we are, where the hierarchy is and going along with balancing the books.

“I’ve left it up to them really.

“There are nuances in all contracts and sometimes it makes it difficult to manage a team.

“But you have to look at the bigger picture, the bottom line and the bottom dollar. You have to work out how you can get them to play and somehow get through it with all these nuances with no-one having their nose put out of joint or being unhappy.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on. It’s far from straight forward and I’m stuck in the middle.

“I have to manage these scenarios the best I possibly can.”
