BLUES boss Sol Campbell felt his side showed real character to bounce back from a shocking start to the second half in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Bristol Rovers.

The Shrimpers were pegged back by the visitors just seconds after the interval when Jayden Mitchell-Nelson capitalised on an error from Elvis Bwomono to fire home.

But Campbell was pleased with how Blues bounced back from the disappointment.

“It’s testament to their character really,” said Campbell.

“It could easily have gone the other way but they stood firm and went again.

“That was fantastic to see.

“The character came out and it was pleasing to see how they recovered.”

Bwomono made a rare mistake having been switched into the centre-back position with Miles Mitchell-Nelson coming in at right-back, despite him being more used to playing in the middle.

But Campbell revealed the switch was down to Bwomono’s extra first team experience.

“I thought Elvis would give us a little bit more stability and control and that’s about it really,” said Campbell.

“He’s a bit more experienced so I put him in the centre-half position.”

However, further forward, Blues were again without midfielder Sam Mantom.

And Campbell confirmed Mantom’s knee injury will continue to be monitored.

“Sam has a slight knee problem and he’s had an injection,” said Campbell.

“We have to see how it is week to week really.”
