ECHOSPORT talks to Bristol Rovers fan David Wilcox ahead of tomorrow’s game at Roots Hall.

What have you made of the season so far?

“It’s a massive cliché but it has been a season of two halves. We were fourth when Graham Coughlan left, unbeaten in 10 and had just beaten Ipswich away.

“Since then, it’s been relegation form with one win in 17.

“To say the second half of the season has been disappointing is an understatement.”

Graham Coughlan is well known to Southend. Why have things started to go wrong since he left?

“Our squad that Coughlan had put together was well organised but limited with a striker in fantastic form.

“Ben Garner has tried and, in my opinion, failed to try and bring in a different style of play.

“We bought plenty of players in January and it’s not worked.

“I think a return to basics is needed, getting the team to work hard and together, or a change in the management.”

What have you made of the recent form. Why haven’t results gone your way?

“We look soft bellied and naive.

“We played a solid 5-3-2 under Coughlan, using the wing-backs as much as possible.

“Garner has favoured a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 with wingers.

“It’s left Clarke-Harris isolated and the goals have dried up.

“Mixed in with some poor defensive performances and it’s not been great.”

What are the hopes for the rest of the season now?

“For some of the younger permanent signings to get runs in the team and improve. Realistically, Garner does need to start winning games by any means though.

“I’d like something to be positive about next season.”

Who is the dangerman?

“Clarke-Harris is the obvious choice but he might not be available.

“I’m hopeful ex-Crystal Palace youngster James Daly will get a run out. There’s been lots of promising reviews of him.”

What’s the team news?

“Clarke-Harris is a doubt and that’s the only new injury news. Both Josh Hare and Daly are fit or close to being fit.”
