Welsh farmers have been reassured that they will receive money post-Brexit after Chancellor Sajid Javid announced £243million of funding.

To support Welsh farmers, the government has confirmed after £243 million shall be made available for the 2020 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS).

The money will support Welsh farmers and provide a confidence booster to them for the new year.

Mr Javid, confirmed the money will support farmers after the UK leaves the Common Agricultural Policy Direct Payments scheme and will allow farmers to prepare for the future with their crops and livestock and can still thrive after Brexit.

He said: “When we leave the European Union (EU) and are freed from the Common Agricultural Policy, we will be able to support our vital rural communities – who are a cornerstone of life in the UK – with a fairer and less bureaucratic system.”

Welsh Secretary, Simon Hart, said that the funding highlights the opportunities available to us as we leave the EU.

He added: “Taking back control of this funding will allow us to better represent the people we serve, ensuring that our farming communities have exactly what they need to flourish after we leave the European Union.”

Lesley Griffiths, Rural Affairs minister, added: “I would call on the UK government to provide guarantees of funding for agriculture and to replace other current EU funds for future years.

“This will allow us to plan important future work to support agriculture, develop the economy, tackle climate change and protect our environment.”
