AN assortment of market stalls will come to the high street...thanks to an old covenant.
Marketing Witham confirmed the town’s Charter Market, which dates back to the time of the Magna Carta, will open on September 3.
The market will then run once a week, every Tuesday. It will be between McColl’s and the United Reformed Church, in the parking bays.
There will be a number of stalls offering fresh breads, cakes, vegetables, fish, costume jewellery, antiques, homeware, plants and clothing.
The charter itself is first known to have been drawn up in 1212, during the reign of King John.
The document describes the patent as a “grant to John Bennett of Wytham in Our said County of Essex and his heirs and assigns a market to be held each Tuesday each week in the year.”
Proceedings will start at 8.30am and the market will run until 3pm.
