A CAT rescue has been given permission to replace its rotten wooden pens with new units for homeless felines.

Colchester Cat Rescue, based in Bromley Road, Ardleigh, put up the new pens in March.

In a letter sent to Tendring Council the trustees apologised stating they had been told by the manufacturer that permission would not be needed.

In a letter to neighbours, the rescue said: "The chalets are now over 40-years-old, we bought them from a cattery that closed down.

"We have repaired them many times but now the rot has defeated us."

The council's planning department said the new pens were a "visual improvement".
