Essex Police were called to Rawstorn Road, Colchester, at around 10.20pm on Friday.
A woman had reported being racially abused and her front door had been damaged.
She also reported being assaulted.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We attended and arrested a man.
"Officers later reported that they had been subjected to homophobic abuse.
"A 47 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear."
He has been released on bail until July 6.
The incident took place the same weekend the popular Essex Pride event took place in Chelmsford.
Last night a thoroughly vile male unleashed a torrent of homophobic abuse at officers from @EPDogSection, @EssexSpecials and Colchester LPT. At least 3 public order/hate crime offences will be added to his charges. These people still exist, but we will deal with them #pridemonth
