OFSTED inspectors want girls to progress as much as boys in maths at a primary school in Dovercourt.

All Saints’ Primary School was recently visited by the education watchdog for a short inspection since it was rated ‘good’ in 2015.

Inspectors found the school is still worthy of its ‘good’ rating, but want girls to progress in maths classes as much as boys at the school.

The Ofsted report said: “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.”

Inspectors found improvements had been made in writing after progress from the end of Key Stage 1 to the end of Key Stage 2 was found to be below national averages for pupils in Year Six in 2017.

They also looked into what teachers were doing to ensure the progress and attainment of girls in maths is in line with that of boys.

In 2018 girls attained standards well below those of boys at the end of both key stages one and two in maths. They also made much less progress than boys by the end of Key Stage 2, but inspectors said class engagement and books show no difference in ability and said the gap arises in tests.

The report added: “Teachers should enable pupils to build up their confidence and fluency in mental arithmetic, continuing to check girls are not falling behind.”
