IT is hoped that it will be 'business as usual' in Beaumaris despite the latest delay to the town's flood alleviation project.

Dawnus, the construction firm carrying out the multi-million pound repairs to the town's drainage system went into administration, with  Grant Thornton taking control of the Dawnus Group in March.

Work on the anticipated seven month project  ground to a halt

The operation has taken over the town's coach and car park raising fears that a delay could affect tourism over the summer with the loss of coach parking.

There were also concerns that the town's annual food festival could be affected from lack of parking.

However, town councillors are now hoping that the work could start again in May with new contractors.

Beaumaris Mayor and the town's flood warden Cllr Jason Zalot said: "It has been frustrating that the flood alleviation scheme is taking longer than we thought, it has been delayed for several months, but we are hoping that the work will start again with a new contractor on May 1.

"It is felt the delay will have not have any real impact, and we are well prepared for any eventualities, and working to make sure it doesn't affect the food festival. It is unlikely. Hopefully it will be business as usual in Beaumaris.

"We have done everything to alleviate the situation making the green area available to coaches, and we are even charging them less than the normal carpark.

"Fairplay to Anglesey County Council's highways department, they have done everything to try to make sure the work goes ahead.

"We can't underestimate the massive impact the flood alleviation scheme will have to save the town from the threat of winter flooding."

Professor Trevor Ashenden town clerk said: "We hope the work will be underway by May. If it does go on longer it might be difficult in the summer, we will be directing coaches to the green, but it could be a squash."

A spokesperson on behalf of the Isle of Anglesey County Council said: “ Following Dawnus going into Administration, the Isle of Anglesey County Council have terminated their contract with Dawnus and are making arrangements with Alun Griffiths Contractors to recommence the Beaumaris Flood Alleviation works towards the end of May 2019.

"We are also discussing the opportunities to recoup some of the time delay due to Dawnus going into administration.

"The Isle of Anglesey County Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate event that was beyond our control. We will also be working with the Town Council to ensure the new programme is sensitive to any events over the summer."
