This week in Down Memory Lane we take a look across Thurrock at some distinctive buildings that have gone... and other eye-catching ones which still remain today.

The first two have gone.

Tilbury collier lookout and signal station near Tilbury Fort, created quite a sight.

As did the lovely old Grays library gardens which sadly went in the mid 1960s when they started building the new library and the neighbouring Thameside Theatre.

Next we enjoy two buildings still here today.

The first is in Chadwell St Mary in Sandy Lane, an impressive 1930 Art Deco Sunspan house. It was designed by Wells Coates and remarkably exhibited at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition in 1934.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is in Stanford-le-Hope – the opening of St Josephs Catholic Church 1912 in Southend Road which had moved from the old site in a barn at Park Avenue.
