A DRUNK who assaulted three police officers after flying off the handle when he was locked out of a bingo hall has been handed a community order.

An intoxicated Jamie Thomson was arrested after smashing the door of Buzz Bingo, in Osbourne Street, Colchester, last month.

Whilst under arrest at Colchester Police Station he became agitated and spat on one officer before kicking two others.

At Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday he admitted three counts of assaulting a police constable and one charge of criminal damage.

Philip Pearson, prosecuting, said: “The incident occurred on February 9 at around 3pm.

“Officers were called to Buzz Bingo to reports of a drunken male who was refusing to leave the premises.

“The man then left to go across the road to get some cash and staff secured the door. He came back and tried to get in and became very angry about being locked out.

“He banged on the door, shouted and kicked the door two or three times and broke the pane of glass.”

Officers arrested Thomson at the scene and took him to Colchester Police Station’s custody suite.

Mr Pearson continued: “Once in custody became extremely aggressive.

“He kicked a door and had to be restrained by four officers.

“Police had concerns for his behaviour and arranged for him to be put in a restraining jacket.

“Whilst his clothes were being removed he spat on one of the officers.”

Thomson then kicked out at two other officers who were helping restrain him. Both suffered only minor injuries.

Caroline Woodley, mitigating, said Thomson had been out celebrating receiving his final paycheque from his old job when he had fallen out with a friend.

She said: “He was trying to go home. The nearest place to get cash was the bingo hall.

“He says he had no intention to end up causing damage.

“He accepts what he did was disgusting and he said in interview as much.”

Magistrates made Thomson subject to an 18 month community order.

He must complete an accredited programme of up to 29 days, complete up to 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and finish 60 hours unpaid work.

Thomson must also pay £50 compensation to each police officer as well as Buzz Bingo.
