A COMMUNITY group initially set up to organise a gala at Bolton Train Station has taken on ambitious new plans to transform the building.

Bolton Area Community Rail Partnership was one of the driving forces behind a £1m project announced last week, which includes waiting room upgrades, new lighting and making the most of currently empty spaces.

The group was formerly known as Bolton Station Community Development Partnership, but at a meeting on Thursday, it was agreed that they would take Community Rail Partnership status in ordered to pursue new funding streams.

“This represents a major step forward for the partnership,” said partnership chair Prof Paul Salveson.

“Having full ‘community rail partnership’ status opens up wider funding opportunities and enables us to work across the borough and with adjoining community rail groups."

The current project includes work on a room in the middle of Platform 4 and 5 being completed alongside the University of Bolton. This will be transformed into a gallery and performance space with light refreshment facilities.

Similarly, space upstairs will be used for a mix of arts and community activities.

The project represents the biggest community rail scheme at one location in the UK.
